While you are not giving much info on awning type/brand, I would support my Dometic electric awning before removing the shock. If I pull down to lower the awning end, it seems the shock is doing a lot of supporting. I have to say, that I have never replaced one though.

Mine (Lippert) are rated at 124 lbs. You need to support the end.
