Reversed Polarity and Open Ground

Hey all...

Just got back from camping a week ago, with our trailer plugged into our surge protector after three days we got an error message of reversed polarity and an open ground. We have done some trouble shooting on that circuit and on other circuits. Only when the trailer is plugged into the surge protector do we get the error message. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this?

We've checked the continuity on the 30amp cable - fine
Tried plugging into a separate electrical service - fine until the trailer is plugged in.

Thanks to all who read and answer.

  • Its the error message on our surge protector....

we are a bit stumped which is why I am asking all of you.

Hoping its not the $450 surge protector that has lasted 18 months.
  • I cant understand how polarity could reverse after being connected for three days if no one has been in the panel.
  • openspaces - it just happened after our week camping trip and we didn't have any problem on the trip and the first three days at home it was fine.

Our shore cord still has both sealed ends on it - so nothing to open and look at easily.

We run an 30 amp house extension cord from our garage, then plug in the surge protector and then plug shore power into it. Haven't had a problem in 18 months that way until this last week.

Husband is wondering if our surge protector went bad.
  • Sorry, I don't have an answer, but I'm curious.

Does your shore power cord have the factory end on it?

Are you using any kind of adapter anywhere on the shore power?

Does this happen if you plug in at home as well as at the campground?
