ROO 233S or 296 pop-up

Hi Camping people, I am Bill. I am 56 and getting in to camping. I bought a new 2013 RAM 1500 Quade Cabe ST sports pickup truck this past Aug. Now I am looking for my camper. I know 5th wheel is the best BUT more $ than I can do. I like the large 296 pop-up rockwood and I like the rockwood ROO233S. The ROO is easer to set up but may eat more gas than the flolded down pop-up. Do any of you out there own eather camper? If so what do you like and what don't you like. Thanks for your help Bill M

Thanks for the reply. I am alone at this point BUT hope to find a woman who will enjoy camping as well. I decided on the pop-up because of the gas difference. It is cheeper as well. I put in a credit app with Lazydays for the HW 296 Rockwood. I hope to use it allot as I am retired now. I know it will be more work setup and take down, but the price of gas has got me. Thanks Bill M

    TIFWIW

I have never met an older hybrid that didn't have rot somewhere.

I had a 31 fter travel trailer and my brother in law had a pop up. We got to a campground within a few minutes if each other. He was 100% set up and sipping on a Coke and I was still fiddling with my camper. :(.

I thought he was just fast so he let me set the camper up. It went up Super fast. The cranking isn't bad at all. If you can make a bed you can pull out a bunk end. It's NO problem at all.

    Enjoy whatever you decide on.
  • Thanks for the info. At least I feel the HW296 is well made and not breaking or falling apart. I have put papers in to get the HW296, if they go throu that is the one I will have. pulling out beds are not so bad on the 296 because you put in the support in first then just roll out the bunk on the support. It has electric roof lift as well and electric tung. I will get a drill to lower and raze the 4 corner supports. Bill M
  • The HW257 (if you don't need a shower), or the HW276 or 277 would be a much better choice if you are by yourself. They are still huge!
Doing a 296 with two people is a lot of work, but by yourself? Yikes!

If you don't drive too far, get a TT or HTT.
At 56 I'm not going to want to be cranking up a roof and pulling out slides. I don't think you'll want to either. It's a lot of work.
  • I have a Flagstaff HW296 which is the twin to the Rockwood, and like previously posted, it is a "beast". It will easily sleep the 5 people that I have in my family; however, if weren't trying to accomidate so many people, we definately would have gone a different direction.

If it were me, and I was in your situation, I would look long and hard at something like the Forest River R-Pod 178, reason being:

    1. still nore aerodynamic that a flat front camper so should be able to get better MPG

    2. Ease of set-up. It takes my wife and I about 25-30 min to set up the camper and even longer to take it down. A few minutes is attributed to keeping a eye on out 3 1/2 yo to make sure he doesnt get into trouble, but it is still a good chunk of time. I can guarantee that when you're breaking this thing down in the middle of summer in Arkansas sweating your ass off....

    3. The dread factor. While in the scope of things it is pretty small, but when were picking places to stay, I try to find a place that were gonna stay for at least 3 days...because of reason #2. If I had a hard walled, I wouldnt have a problem staying at 14 different camprgounds on a 14 day trip....don't think I would want to do that with my HW296.

Don't take my above negatives as a slam on the camper, because it's not; that being said, when it's just my and my wife after the kids are grown and out of the house, our sleeping facilities will be different.

    Good luck with your decision.

  • How many people do you plan to be camping with? PUPs are great at sleeping a good amount of people comfortably. If it is just one or two of you, PUPs are still nice, but it would probably be much more than you need.
  • You will get about 10 mpg (or less) pulling the Roo. The HW296 is a beast of a camper, but you'll get better mileage with it.
How far do you plan to tow and what weather will you camp in?

Set up is a lot easier with the Roo, but the HW will gie a much more "open" feeling. We camp in 5 degrees F in winter, and realize that the inside of our trailer isn't going to be anywhere near 67 degrees, so it's fine.

Have you been inside each one? They are VERY different.

Check them out and go with the one your better half likes.
    Happy wife = happy life!
