Roof maintenance, Dicor or Eternabond

In a few weeks when I have time, I am going to do some maintenance on my roof, It's a Northstar with a rubber roof and It looks like some of the dicor is cracking. This is the first truck camper or RV I have owned and I want to make sure it's good and watertight. I am taking the truck camper to Central America in the fall and will hit the tail end of the rainy season. Last time I was down there and it rained, it really poured, a mass amount of water coming down, I would like to make sure my roof if sealed for these conditions. I know I can use Dicor lap sealant on the roof but I am wondering if it would make sense to go above and beyond just going over it with Dicor and maybing using Eternabond on all seams as well? I also saw that Dicor sells a sealant that goes on with a roller over the entire roof and have seen other full roof sealants mentioned in other threads as well. What do you all recommend?

  • Eternabond or Dicor sealant will have directions on how to prep the area. Follow them to the letter and the product will serve you well. If one takes any short cuts then it will fail in short order.
  • So would I use just soap and water and brush to clean the roof? What about bleach or something else? I know mineral spirits is bad for the rubber roof.

That EPDM liquid roof coating sounds interesting, a little spending, but might be worth the insurance.

Right now I am thinking clean roof, reseal the cracked dicor with Dicor lap sealant. Do seams with eterna bond tape, and finally a coat of EPDM liquid roof.

I am wondering now though if I am going to do all of this maybe I should mount my solar brackets and have the wire run before I do the whole roof. Still undecided.
  • You can't go wrong sealing the seams with Eternabond. It's usually a one time repair.

If the Dicor is cracking I would remove the loose sections and reapply the Dicor.

Clean the area well before applying Eternabond or Dicor.
  • Keep in mind that whatever you use the seal(bond) is only as good as the preparation.
