Roof support when installing A/C

Hi forum.
I read in my pop-up manual that the roof needs some sort of a support bar when adding an roof-top air conditioner. This bar is a factory option, but it isn't clear to me if my pop-up has this bracket installed.

I have a 1998 Startcraft Starflyer pop-up.

Here's a picture of a bar that goes across the roof. Is that it or would I need to add another bar?
Thanks.

My Starcraft 14RT A/C install on the roof had two of those roof support pieces installed - one of either side of the 14X14 inch Air Conditioner hole in the roof.

This is a GOOGLE IMAGES showing what my roof support members look like...

My air conditioner is a 13,500 BTU model...

I see in some of the google images that only one roof support member is used like in this google image

My install also has a wiring cover that the 120VAC AC cable is in running over to the side of the ceiling and all of the Air Conditioner cable is wrapped back and forth a coupe of times and held in place behind the ceiling valance curtain. When I am setting up camp I have to remove a length of the 120VAC A/C cable and plug into a special 20AMP 120VAC receptacle in the lower half of the POPUP. My 120VAC receptacle is located in my wrap around seating cushions area.

The ceiling valance curtains and the window curtains hide this A/C drop cable so that all is out-of-sight when being used...

My Air Conditioner was an add-on option and prior to having the A/C on my roof the electric operated roof went up and down without any effort. With the added weight of the roof mounted air conditioner my electric roof raise winch makes a noticeable strain noise when going up... It has performed great however over the past 5-6 years.. I doubt it would raise the POPUP roof with a 15000BTU Air Conditioner mounted on it...

  • That is the brace for the air conditioner. I would proceed with installation. As RoyB pointed out, there are often two of these bars with one on each side of the existing vent or future hole in the roof.

I did some searching around and every stock 1996-2000 Starflyer that I found did not have the brace you picture next to the vent. Your PUP was prepped for having an air conditioner installed.

One good example is this 1996 Starflyer.
  • If you can, try to place the AC unit as close to the center of the roof as possible. This will equalize the extra load to all lift posts.
  • While I agree and it makes sense to do it that way, Jayco had placed the vent hole and therefore the AC on the curb side of my first PUP's roof. I will say that it was nice to be able to see directly behind me in traffic for moving through different lanes, etc.
  • I too have looked into these and will be installing some on my Rockwood camper.

They are very simple to install and I feel do a world of good if you live in an area with heavy snowfall and have an A/C unit on top.

The thing to keep in mind is that some popups have a flat roof and some have a slight curve. You want to make sure you match that surface.

I know the rockwoods have a flat roof so I have the option to fabricate something myself just using aluminum square stock and a simple mounting bracket as was shown in the previous post.
