Ropin' the Heki

During a conversation with a person in the RV business the subject of Heki skylights came up. He mentioned that most new campers shipped across the country arrived minus the Heki skylight lid. The solution was to run a rope under the mattress and tie it to the aluminum handle. I thought that was a good preventive measure, though I have not yet had a problem with the Heki 2 skylight. Now I have a nylon cord run under the mattress and I pull the aluminum handle down and tie each end of the cord to it before we roll out. Call me paranoid. :-)

My opinion about Heki and Dometic windows is in THIS dissertation. It is only my opinion of this product... many folks love 'em but I would not have them again.
  • I agree with getting parts from Europe is a better way to go. We don't open our skylight very much, but know that we could if we needed to exit. We love the light during the day and being able to look out it while in bed. I couldn't imagine only having a fantastic fan in it's place. We'd give up far too much light.
  • All of the windows on my NL are Heki and we open and close them every trip, but very carefully. The skylight has been opened for ventilation in hot weather a number of times over the eight years that I've owned the camper. Nothing has broken yet, but I've read many tales of woe with Heki and they make me nervous.

I called Dometic to see about ordering some spare latches and parts. The automated phone system referred me to Camping World. Called Camping World to find that they are unfamiliar with Heki (or the person who answered the phone was). I've got Leisureshopdirect in the UK bookmarked and will see about ordering from them.

Meanwhile, tying it down gives me some peace of mind. ;)
  • The Heki skylight is a poster child for Great Concept, Poor Execution.

The good news is you will have to take out a second mortgage to buy replacement parts through Dometic USA, or get them for about 1/2 price (including air shipping) from Europe.
  • I never liked them and found that Host will build your camper without one. They will set it up just like an Arctic Fox with a roof fantastic fan and side escape window.
  • I don't think they are that fragile, but you do have to know how to close it correctly! :) BTW, I don't hink it should be that hard, but it's not as easy as it could be.
