I must be showing my age, but I didn't realize that Rt. 66 had become sort of obscure. But it has. I first traveled the entire length of the road back in the mid-60s - starting in Chicago and ending at the Santa Monica pier.
We traveled in a "drive a way", an arrangement whereby broke college students would drive someone's auto across the country for a small fee. You were given a certain number of miles to travel by the company. If you went over the mileage you lost your money. Of course, we didn't get our deposit back since we made every diversion possible including the meteor crater near Winslow, Arizona. Did I mention that our "drive a way" was a 1965 Ford Mustang? Great trip in every sense possible.
We always pull over to the Rt 66 signs along I40 on our western trips and travel the old road for miles before returning to the freeway. It brings back the memory of breathless discovery of the Old Town in Albuquerque, Native Americans and their turquoise jewelry in Gallup, NM, $5 a night motel rooms at the Cactus Inn in Holbrook or skinny dipping in the ponds at Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Of course we broke down in Needles, Cal., in 110 degree heat.
Great all American Road Trip. Take a look at Rt.66 on You Tube. Lots of inspiration there. And don't forget to load the Eagles into your iPod.
