There is an App, for it. There is a Route 66 app for iPhone or Android use. On this App, there is interesting information on waysides and side trips, along the way.
Another interesting highway, to traverse, is the Lincoln Highway

(essentially I-80) and that one goes closer to Tetons and Yellowstone, Yosemite National Parks, as well as many other National Monuments, State Parks.
