OK RoyB I am close to the old Route 66 and yes there are still sections that can be traveled in IL and MO but as C.Traveler pointed out not much.
There is an old highway that I cannot recall the route # but it starts in Chicago and runs all the way to Florida so if you are interested in historic routes you may do a search for that for a trip to Chicago and then follow Route 66 to LA.
Well I could not stop thinking about the connection between Chicago IL and Florida so I did some research and here is the Dixie Highway info that ends in Jacksonville FL. I have not fully explored this site yet but it seems to be filed with information.
