running fridge while camper is not level

Trying to work through all the systems on my used and neglected travel trailer. I am running the fridge on electricity, the freezer is getting COLD, but not the fridge. I have it parked in the street, it is level front to back, but not side to side, probably a 5-6" drop from one side to the next. Will the fridge work at this angle?
  • I've been running mine while traveling to keep everything cool. Should I avoid this in the mountains? I don't want to do "cumulative" long term damage.
  • Put some boards under the low side tires to get it reasonably level. It does take a while for the fridge section to cool down.
  • Bottom part of the frig takes longer than the freezer....could take up to 18 hrs. to get fully cold...Each time you open it to check it it is cold you dump cold air and it will take longer..

If the freezer is getting cold...(enough to freeze water) then the bottom section will follow.
  • You really dont want to run it out of level too far. You think it's OK but the damage is cumulative. So some day when your in very high temps it wont keep up anymore.
After 13 years my firdge still works perfectly no matter how hot it is outside. I would not keep forcing it to run if I were you.
  • I wouldn't think leveling would affect only the fridge and not the freezer. There's a single cooling unit for both.

How long have you had it running? On a hot summer day mine takes every bit of 8 hours to cool the fridge down to 40-50 degrees.

There's a sensor clipped to one of the fins inside the fridge. Its position up/down sets the balance of cooling between the freezer and the fridge. I *think* sliding it up higher makes the fridge cooler.
  • It might work but running it too far from level will do long term damage. It takes a long time in hot weather to cool properly.

If you have a smartphone, get a level app. When facing the fridge, it should be within 6 degrees front to rear and 3 degrees side to side.
