I found it much easier to special order a trailer,Figure out exactly what you want and start e-mailing dealers for a price. I don't mind traveling a 1,000 miles to get what I want.You would be amazed at the changes you can make in a trailer by talking to the factory sales people. Don't be afraid to ask Questions or the factory reps recomdations.

Dealers costs ??
The RV manufacturer has high volume dealers (example; 15-20 a month) who can get a much lower price per unit than a dealer who sells maybe 4-5 units a year. Usually the dealer owner/mgr and his controller will be the only one at the dealer who will know what that cost is. Not even the sales manager may know that number.

Any price they want to use and will vary between dealers.

My wife was a controller for a large mobilehome/RV dealer for many years. She saw what the dealers actual cost was per unit on specific floorplans. The cost varied with the number of units the dealer took on in a certain period.

Words like MSRP or dealers invoice or manufacturers invoice all can be different numbers at different dealerships on the same brand trailer with the same floor plan and same standards and options.

This isn't the auto industry.

Remember that the "S" means suggested....not actual, not honest-to-goodness, but suggested. We bought both our HTT and TT from RVW. Can't remember the # on the HTT, but the "MSRP" on the TT was $32,000+. Nice number, but the number that really matters is what you and the dealer can agree upon. We paid $X + change and were happy. If they'd listed the MSRP as $26,000 and we paid the same $X that we felt was what we could afford, we'd have been just as happy. I don't see it as cheating or greed. You pay what you feel is affordable.

Same thing applies to Macy's or other retail stores. Never a day goes by that you can't walk in there and find a jacket "Regular Price - $69.99", but lucky you, you can buy it for $49.99. I'd guess that their "Regular Price" is the same but worded differently as MSRP. The bottom line is that you agree on a price and that's what it's worth to you. Macy's is not going to bargain any further on that $49.99 price. If you want it, that's the deal.

i guess it depends on your definition of "negotiate". years back I would have virtual wrestling matches with car/etc. salesmen. back and forth, take the offer to the sales manager, etc. come back and debate some more. truly a harrowing but enjoyable experience. with the last offer being for free floor mats.
since then I know what I should be paying and what I want to pay and we approach it like gentlemen. no sweat, no pressure, etc. if they don't like my offer I just go out, hop in my car and drive off. and yes, I have had salesmen chase me across the lot while I was leaving.

Kinda surprising the comment about not wanting to negotiate deals...It's not the most enjoyable thing to do but it's kinda necessary when dealing with big ticket items IMO...

Now that's the way to purchase an RV. Try your best to go through your local dealer. We do want these guys to stay in business.

FullTime - the fact that you don't want to dicker is to your disadvantage. You think someone is going to give you their bottom line price sooner or later. You couldn't be more wrong. No one is going to give you their bottom line number right off the bat. So you chase around the country until ..... Unless you have gained some knowledge in all those stops, you got a lot of wasted time on your hand. So I ask you - How Much Is Your Time Worth? At $100/per hour you probably lost several thousand dollars. When in reality, you could have done your homework, sat down and hammered out a deal, and agreed on a price the first time you sat down. Comparison shopping when you don't know what you want is one thing, refusing to negotiate just plain don't make any sense. Even if you don't come to agreement. It's not time to move on until you at least try.
