I like LarryJM's solution better. Just shove the block of foam up under the awning using a long handled window washer tool..no ladder needed.
I use my awning rod to install the foam pieces and it can be used to pull them out since it has a right angle at the end. However, I like the rope since that allows me to position it right where I want it and then remove it easily.
