Hi Bruce . I think when the tech suggested the f81's , he was ref. to the automatic sat finding Tailgater system, where the sat signal as well as the 12v power to operate the auto-find motor comes thru the same single line.
The tech swapped them at n/c so I just let him do it.
When I had a non powered dish, I always used the standard connector as you stated without any problems.
I just posted this info in case someone has a problem with quality, it may or may not help.

At the connector you should have no problems with the standard connector. Of course, you can always swap out the connector/coupling with a 3 gig one. Where you run into problems is with splitters. You must have a splitter capable of transferring power for a powered dish or LNB.
