We will be heading From St. Augustine, FL to Savannah and Charleston SC - having never been there before can anyone give me some suggestions of places to see and stay and things to do. Thank you.

  • We've been to Charleston many times (only camped once) since my sister and her family live just outside Charleston. Been to Savannah 2 or 3 times, though never camping there.

Patriots Point, Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, The Battery, lots of different things downtown, are all great things to do in and around Charleston. There are a lot of nice restaurants there.

I agree that James Island County Park just southwest of Charleston is a great place to stay.

    Hope you enjoy your trip.
  • I will 3rd the suggestion of James Island County Park as a place to stay. We found it superb when we stayed there 4 years ago.

As for things to do, at Charleston, we did Patriot's Point. I very much enjoyed the visit of USS Yorktown CV10. And there was an exhibit of a Navy forward post from Viet Nam, including a PBR.

In Savannah, I sort of did the "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" tour. Went around looking at the buildings and sites that were part of that book and movie.

  • Bonaventure cemetery in Savannah is nicer then many public gardens and I think is the most photographed cemetery in the U.S..
  • We are at Patriot Point and Fort Sumter today. Spent two days in downtown Charleston earlier this week.

    Great.

Being retired USN SCPO we are staying at the FamCamp at Charleston AFB.
  • The Campground at James Island County Park is excellent. Full hookups in a great setting and just a short drive into Charleston, South Carolina.
  • In Charleston James Island CG is the preferred park and is a history buffs dreamland. If you park at the visitor center you can ride the tourist bus for free. A paid tour is worth the price as well.
  • We love Savannah. Check out the waterfront, Tybee Island & Forsyth Park. We also had fun checking out the cemetaries and doing a tourist trap ghost tour.
  • Just walk around or take a tour bus.
They are both great old Southern cities with lots of old houses, municipal buildings (if you like architecture) and beautiful parks and gardens.
We also like the Savannah Art Museum.
Usually stay near Beaufort S.C. (Hunting Island S.P.) which is about half way between them.
  • Skidaway Island State Park is a pleasant place to camp and not far from Savannah.
