I think if you drive in panic mode thinking you are going to get into an accident any minute, that makes things worse because you are apt to overreact to any bad condition.
While you have to be alert, ready, and constantly monitoring conditions (especially traffic around you), you also need to be relaxed to a certain extent. White knuckles on the steering wheel for hours on end will wear you out pretty quickly. And it takes any joy out of the trip itself. For me, the journey is a big part of the overall experience.
