Securing a battery against theft?

Just this morning, a guy stole the battery off my travel trailer. The sheriff arrested him about 45 mins later and I got the battery back. Anyways, is there some way to secure a battery that won't interfere with the box or short out the positive terminal to ground?
  • I use "Python adjustable locks on my battery boxes,,Like said earlier,, If they are going to cut the locks to get at the battery then they will do more damage to something stronger if I used that,, I can get the Python cable pretty tight against the box eliminating a pair of bolt cutters getting under it,, the would have to use power tools,, And I would hate to have a $300 fortress box ruined to get at a $79-$100 battery..
  • Steal it yourself, before an unknown thief comes by to get it. That way you can return it to its rightful place when needed. That is really the only way to make sure it doesn't get stolen off your trailer.
  • Torklift also makes a sliding battery box which is what I have.

  • Very loud aux. battery alarm on door or lid.

I would think the metal tool boxes installed on the trailer frame with stove type bolts on the bottom of the frame. The internal box locks are the best secure locks against the thief's that have bolt cutters or dremal cutting tools... The rounded head of the stove bolts is also a good deterrent...

Like said above there is really no defense if they really want your battery. You make it too hard they might just steal the whole trailer...

I always thought this side mounted tool box was great metal box for securing 4EA GC2 6VDC deep cycle golf cart batteries... The lip overhang is a perfect spot to install vent holes to vent off the battery fumes... You can also run some rubber type battery hold down straps inside the box as well.

This is going to be my gameplan when I upgrade to bigger batteries soon. My current batteries are installed across the front trailer frame all out in the open... Its almost saying "TAKE ME - TAKE ME"

Keeping the batteries out of sight and making it harder for the thief to rip them off quickly seems to be the best defense you can come up with... I also have 12VDC motion detector lights come on from my trailers which are parked in my back yard. The house also has motion lights that come on as well...

Try this battery box hold down. I have had mine for four years with no problems, even though my rv storage has had some problems with battery theft.

This will stop most thieves. If the battery still disappears you need to store your trailer somewhere safer.

This is what I am using also after having a battery stolen.

  • Nothing short of removing the battery will stop a determined thief.

Chains, padlocks and heavy steel just will make the thieves angry and a better chance they will cause additional damage...

With the selection of portable power tools now days even big hardened locks are childs play.
  • I would suggest something like this:
    Hold down
It is only will make it harder to steal. Anything more could cause more damage then the battery is worth.
