I don't think its a question of how much weight they will hold. It's a question of what will hold the wheel on in case of a broken axel. The Semi Floater with a c-clip type system can lose the wheel in the case of a broken axel. The tapered bearing type is less likely to lose the wheel. The only tapered bearing semi floating type that I'm aware of is the Ford 9 inch. And that hasn't been around for a while. I really haven't been keeping up with that stuff as of late.
The new half tons seem to be rated high enough to carry the loads that I would expect to need. But I most certainly would not like to tow those loads with a c-clip type semi floating axel. I want to get home with the same number wheels that I left with.
Towing 10,000 lbs and losing a rear wheel just seems dangerous. Not just for me but for those vehicles coming toward you.
I may be overly cautious because I have seen a axle break and a wheel roll lose down the road.
