Axle Details
The Ford 8.8" axle was introduced in 1983 to replace the (more expensive to produce) Ford 9 Inch axle. Their 8.8" tall ring gears and 28 or 31 spline axle shafts made them a great choice for mid to full-size trucks and SUVs and is why Ford continues to use them in many of their vehicles. Ford 8.8" axles are available in front and rear applications in both solid axle and IFS/IRS configurations and can easily be identified by their diff covers which are square with very rounded edges and 10 cover bolts.
*Note: Older "5-Cut" face milled gears may have different set up specs than the newer "2-Cut" face hobbed gears.
