On a semi floating axle, the axle shaft itself carries the weight. On full floating axles, the shaft just transmits power. The big three manufacturers all at one time made a semi floating eight lug axle for their light GVW 3/4 ton trucks. Sometimes referred to as imitation 3/4 tons. As someone already mentioned, the full floating axles are exponentially stronger, and can carry a lot more weight.
