I have seen it happen. An example is posted above. If you equip a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton with the same engine. There is very little difference in price. So yes, if I can get a 3/4 ton for a grand or two more that an 1/2 ton with a c-clip axle. I think I would go that route.
But there is a larger registration fee for the 3/4 ton.
Don't forget that modern engineering has brought us the Ford 6.0 and 6.4 diesels and condensation in the eco boost intercooler. The original Bosch injectors for the Duramax were nothing to write home about either. Then there was the dowel pin in the Cummins.
I do plan on driving on off road trails, on the beach and in the desert and in the Sierra's so I will be buying a 4x4 and will be using the compound transfer case.
You can break any axle with the power produced by modern engines while in low range. With a full floater all you need to bring is the axle shaft and you are pretty much good. It's a repair that can easily be done in the field.
