On a semi floating axle, the axle shaft itself carries the weight. On full floating axles, the shaft just transmits power. The big three manufacturers all at one time made a semi floating eight lug axle for their light GVW 3/4 ton trucks. Sometimes referred to as imitation 3/4 tons. As someone already mentioned, the full floating axles are exponentially stronger, and can carry a lot more weight.
Not just light-duty! Dodge put semi-floating 8-lug 9.25's in 3500-series Ram Vans, GM puts 9.5" 14-bolts in SRW cutaway 3500's, and AFAIK, Ford used semi-floating axles (I think Dana 60's) in all E350's except 15-pax and ambulances for several years.
