I have also heard that some manufacturers are going back to rear drum. Can't believe that my sons 2011 Toyota has rear drum and my 05 Kia has rear disk.
I've seen a few front wheel bearings (which are essentially the same as full float rear bearings) fail and the brake assembly kept the wheel from falling off.
I'm not arguing that semi floating axles are as strong as full floating, because they aren't, but I just don't think they are anything to be afraid of if the truck is properly loaded and maintained.
I was a Ford tech and I might be wrong but I believe that GM went back to drums for a few years after having problems with their disc brakes but now they are all discs again.
