Can someone help me? I am new to this whole trailer thing. We have a 2010 Sequoia. We are wanting to get a Forest River hybrid 233s. Here are the specs for it.
GVW: 6,780
Dry Weight: 4,670
Payload Capacity: 1,870
Hitch Weight: 590
We have 5 kids so we would be towing with 7 passengers in the vehicle. Can we tow this trailer with our sequoia? Our door jam sticker is pretty much the same as the one above.
I feel like I am trying to learn a foreign language trying to figure this all out. :)
The payload (same as occupant / cargo capacity number) is the maximum weight your Sequoia is rated to carry. That includes people, cargo (in the truck), weight distribution hitch, and trailer tongue weight, combined.
You can used some average numbers to calculate what those spec numbers will grow to.
Average trailer camping load (pots and pans, dishes, bedding, camp chairs, BBQ, water, groceries, etc) is 800 to 1000 lbs. That would make that trailer approximately 5700 lbs loaded.
Average tongue weight is 12.5% of loaded trailer weight. That 5700 lb trailer would have a little over 700 lbs of tongue weight.
Average weight distribution hitch is 100 lbs.
Now take your 1230 payload number and subtract the weight of your seven people and any planned cargo (coolers and snacks, kids games, car seats, diaper bags, etc) for the Sequoia. Compare what is left to the 800+ lbs required by that trailer. If you still have some wiggle room, you're within your weight ratings. I suspect, you will be over.
