Set up ok?

We are about to finalize purchase of a Starcraft ultra lite 27bhu. It's 33 ft to the tongue and will be max 7700 loaded. We have a 2015 Sierra Denali with the 6.2l. Weight of the trailer is 80 percent of our capacity. Intend to purchase equalizer.

My husband is having last minute panic attacks about whether this set up is safe for us and the truck.

Feedback appreciated!

  • We are new to this, so extra explanation is appreciated (necessary) ;) What is the potential issue issue with our set up?
  • if the 1500 has the hd tow package with 6.2 in theory you should be okay. but in your situation you should also consider future plans as to which vehicle is the the wiser choice.

The 6.2l can be had in the 1500 Denali. (Op corrected from 5.3l)

To the OP, when you say it is at 80% of your capacity, what capacity are you referring to?

Husband here - was referring to the loaded trailer weight being 80% of the total towing capacity.
  • The payload of the truck says it is 1420 lbs.

    Maximum towing capacity is 8900lbs.

    GCWR is 15000 lbs.

We expect that the wet weight of the trailer will not exceed 7100 lbs.

The truck is a 1500 series.

The worries here aren't so much with the weight as we are well below our maximums, more with the length and potential sway.
  • You need to look at the payload ratings of the truck. Doesn't matter if it is a 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton and so on. If the loaded tounge weight, or total towing weight are not over your ratings you are fine. Many 1/2 ton trucks will be fine with that weight, many will not, it all depends on the particular truck.

  • Need a little more info. What's the payload capacity of the truck? It will say on the loading sticker on the drivers door jamb. Also, what do you plan to carry in the truck?

Just 2 people and nothing in the bed you'll be fine. Load 6 adults and fill the bed with firewood? Not so fine.
