The thing is, we are taking within 5km/hr difference. I would rather go 5km/hr slower and save fuel.
If you want that then an 3.5L Ecoboost engine would have been a better option. Its greater low rpm torque/horsepower allows it to hold higher gears than the 5.0L which needs to downshift to be at the higher rpms where it makes power. That is just one of the drawbacks of a N/A engine versus a turbocharged one.
And when the turbo breaks, I would need a new engine.
No. Who told you that? If that were the case then diesels manufacturers would be selling crate engines for semi-trucks left and right. You would probably need to replace the turbochargers at least three times over the million mile life span of semi-truck due to the duty cycle of those engines.
If a turbo breaks(which is rare on modern liquid/oil cooled turbos) then you would replace it, clean out your charge air cooler, and go on down the road. It is not different than if a water pump breaks and you need to flush out the radiator. Last I checked the price per turbo was about $600 or so from the dealer and probably a lot less aftermarket.
Friend of mine just go his 6 month old car back. A part of the turbo broke off, went through the engine and out the tailpipe.
Got a new engine out of that.
I also am not talking about diesels.
I know of someone else who's waste gate stuck closed and did not release the pressure at idle. That cost them a new head gasket.
