I work for a company that has a fleet of 3.5L Ecoboost F150's across the US at our 100+ locations as parts delivery and sales trucks that we keep up to 200k miles before selling them. Our delivery drivers run the dog snot out of them and they aren't always up to date on oil changes and other maintenance. Guess what! Not one turbo failure.
I understand that some people fear what they don't have much knowledge of, and I also have heard many people like to tell "stories" about his brother's cousin's son-in-law's neighbor who had a turbo failure. Most of the time these "stories" don't pass the litmus test when someone who has real knowledge about turbochargers starts digging deeper into these tall tales. Sort of like the compressor wheel ending up at the tailpipe "story" told earlier. Some people gotta make up this stuff so they can justify and make them feel better about their own choices.
2017 Honda Civic Sport, less than 5000km on it. Engine dies on the highway, gets it towed to the local dealer, they eventually tear it apart. Damaged piston and missing chunk off the compressor side. I saw the pictures.
