If, just for example, it takes 80hp to cruise 60mph and your truck is capable of producing 78hp in 6th and 110hp in 5th at 60mph with the gear and rpm available, it'll easily cruise along in 5th and relax enough to shift to 6th. Then after a mile or so of gradually losing one or two mph due to 2hp too little to maintain 60mph in 6th, it'll downshift to 5th and repeat. The answer is to lock out 6th. Since I have no way to lock out O/D with my Torqshift 5spd, I can maintain just a little pressure on the loud peddle even if cruise is on and it'll keep it from shifting to O/D until I'm out of that scenario. As advanced as our transmissions, TCM, ECM and PCM are, there is still no other option than to take over lock out the higher gear in that situation. Your truck offers that ability for that reason. Mine does not.
