Shocks

A search resulted in 21 pages of discussion but nothing definitive I could take away. Perhaps someone can offer some additional information for me...

Looking to put new shocks on my 2500 Duramax 4x4. When adding new shocks does everyone do both front and rear or will adding just new rear shocks be of benefit...looking to dampen the bumps and slow the recoil.

Last question...which brand. Read about Bilstein 5100 & 4600, Monroes, and something else that slips my mind. Anyone have experience with these brands?

Thank you!

  • Bilstein 4600 front and rear on 2010 Ram 3500 4x4 megacab pulling 13.5k fifth wheel.
  • If you still have the OEM shocks then your about 5 years late on replacing them. Replace all four. I went with Bilstein HD (yellow and blue). Did have an issue with the grommets failing. Had to go through the internet company I bought them from (eshocks) which turned out to be a pain. I like the shocks but will never buy from eshocks again.
  • On the GM forums, lots of guys switch to Bilsteins and are very happy with them. And I believe you want to replace all four.

Bilstein 5100's here non lifted TV vast improvement!!
Always do all four when replacing shocks!!!
  • The thing I noticed with the rancho shocks was towing the TT to my garage on the East side of the Columbia over a concrete bridge with the expansion strips and feeling the TT joint the rear of the truck and then with the new shocks coming back to get ready for the Alaska trip it was very much smoother. It can be difficult as road conditions are different and easy to forget.

  • I don't think you're going to find anything definite because you're reading opinions and opinions are as varied as the makes of shocks out there. I think it just amounts to reading what people think and go with the brand that sounds best to you.

FWIW I have the Bilstein 4600 on my Dodge dually and am very happy with them. A good combination of reasonable cost, and high quality.
  • I installed the rancho 9000 adjustable shocks on our 2001 3500 dually and noticed a difference when towing the TT we bought for the trip to Alaska. I install the yellow and blue bilsteins 4600 on our 05 when almost new and feel they are very good. Just looked at the original shocks for the 05 in the bilstein boxes in my basement and thinking why did I keep them. I "think" all four would be the better idea.
