I've always installed a Marinco disconnect kit on any trailer we've owned that wasn't already so equipped and have never had the slightest concern that someone might want to walk off with the cable. That said, for those who just can't get past this agonizing thought just cut your main service cable back in length so the connection to an extension cable can be tucked somewhere out of the weather, say within the wheel well. The shorter cable will tuck easily back in through the mouse hole to it's storage compartment without tangling yet still be permanently attached to the trailer.
I just got around to this mod and I'm very happy with it.

Very nice job and write up! thanks for sharing.
I was going to do this project on our old trailer, but sold it and replaced with different trailer that came with detachable power cord already. - JD_and_BeastletExplorer

Let me see cutting the cord with 120 volts going thru it would make for a interesting timecamperforlife wrote:
A lot of those guys will just cut the cords... Which repair would you rather have?poppin_fresh wrote:

Marinco or Furrion shore power kit, no more problems.
My next trailer will get this treatment for sure. Not only because it will avoid the "plug falling into the hole" issue but because it will eliminate another place for mice to get in.
That little slide door thing will NOT stop them from using the cord to climb in if they want too.
Sounds good but a local campground had the cords stolen from six trailers. Most likely for scrap. All had the removable cord.
Boy am I glad I don't frequent campgrounds.
We had about 400' of wire stolen from my work building. They cut it. Luckily for them, it was a ground cable. - Tom_BarbExplorer

If they are smart enough to steal for the copper value, they are smart enough to unplug it. - parcanyExplorer

- Anmacc2ExplorerI've been camping 40 years mostly in campgrounds and state parks. Not once, not ever, have I had anything touched or stolen. Same with my boat. I've never had anything taken off my boat. Same with our motorcycles. We leave our $100 helmets sitting on the seats. It's an honor code among us. It is best part of the sports. We watch out for each other and treat each other with respect.
