My current truck is our first short bed in many years. I was about ready to trade it for another long bed but after some reading and conversation with a handful of others who've done the same, I decided to mount a second set of bed rails to center the pin 52" from the rear window or 12" behind the axle. The first hitching set the rear and front suspension results the same as with the hitch 3.5" in front of the axle. First tow, I couldn't tell the difference except I could make a full lock U-turn without worry of hitting the cab. However, our pin weight is only 1700 lbs and the hitch another 140. This puts less leverage on the truck than a 500 lb tongue weight on a non-WDH ball. I don't recommend this as it goes against the manufacturer's loading recommendations but it's working for us with our relatively light pin weight.
