should sliders stay in or out???

We have our travel trailer parked permanently parked in a campground. I generally move the slides in when we leave after a weekend of camping. Most of the other folks leave their slides out all of the time.

I thought I was told that leaving them out causes them to sag over time.....

What do you all think????

I think supporting it is a good idea if you leave it out. I would use PVC with caps on each end, 2 of them stacked so they will kick out if you forget and pull away. I saw somebody do that with their truck camper jacks. If they forgot they were down and pulled away, the PVC would just kick out and no damage done.

I would ,make sure your leveling jacks are down, you do not want to put upward pressure on the slide when you move around in there.

You should never brace your slide-out. If your camper shifts even a small amount while your slide out is braced you may damage it. It also will void your warranty if you still have an active one.
  • If you are going to leave them out and plan on using supports, I would check your manual first. Just because they sell slide supports does not mean they are a good thing. Some mfgs. advise against them. If you were to have a tire lose air pressure or sink in the mud it could put strain on the supported slide and even bend the frame. Check before you use them.

  • I've only had my TT with slide out a little over a month but when parked at home I keep the slideout out and brace it up. Thought about buying the slideout jacks but I know where mine will be parked every time and have two 24" boards cut and waiting to be used when we get home. If I was going to be staying at different places more than a week at a time I would buy the adjustable slide out jacks. Can't hurt unless you don't know what yer doing.
  • If my RV was permanently parked and I was not there, I would put them in to avoid severe weather if it occurred to prevent extensive damage. Very simple to pull the slides in vs. leaving them out exposed to unexpected severe weather IMO.
  • Ours stay out all summer, although periodically we bring them in and back out to "exercise" them... That was our dealer suggestion, and certainly does no harm.
  • We leave ours out all summer long, do to the fact that we go to our place every weekend thru out the summer. Plus ours get some shade so I don't worry about the seals getting dry. And as for the critters, I only have the mice problem during winter when the slides are close figure that one out. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.;)
  • When we had ours on a permanent spot, I usually pulled it in unless we were doing back-to-back weekends. If I had had an awning over it, I may have left it out more. Lots of people there left their's out though.
  • I usually pull mine in when not using the rv. Keeps the sun off the seals and less chance of critter entery.
