Size of truck

We are ready to purchase our first fifth wheel trailer and are having trouble deciding on the proper truck. Everyone tells us something different. We are looking at a 32 footer. Will an F150 with eco boost motor pull this? It says that it is rated for 11300Lbs..

  • Your question was, "will an F-150 pull it?" The answer is yes, and so will a VW Bug. The question should not be can it pull it, but is it capable of safely towing it, which includes safe stopping, cornering, dealing with cross winds on the highway and of course those semis that blow by you and move you all over the road. If you are trying to save a buck, use what you already have and don't mind driving on the edge of excitement, then stick with the half-ton. I might suggest that you try towing with both, maybe someone can loan you a larger truck for a demo ride, then decide what you feel most comfortable with. I have towed with both and speak from experience when I say that comfort and ease of mind, or lack thereof, will tell on you at the end of a long haul.
  • No, you need a HD/SD truck either 3/4 ton or one ton. The price difference between 3/4 and 1 is only a few hundred dollars so you may as well get a one ton.

If you are going to stick to the flatlands then a gas engine may work for you, otherwise get a diesel.

And do not listen to the 5ver salesmen on what kind of truck you need, they lie a lot. They'll say anything to get a unit sold.

  • You need to know the loaded pin weight of the trailer (i.e. the weight that will be sitting in the back of the truck) and the rated payload of the truck. The allowable pin weight will be the rated payload of the truck minus the weight of the people and "stuff" you carry in the truck.
The F150 may well not be enough.
