Sleep under a camper shell instead of truck camper?

I am exploring ideas. I'm not totally discounting possibility of buying a truck camper (or something else), but my main need is for a place to sleep from time to time when on the road. I have 2008 Nissan Titan 4-door crew cab and me being 6'2" tall, it's a bit cramped sleeping in the crew cab. I have a styrofoam mattress I use and it works fine with a pillow and blanket but I feel cramped.

So, I could get a truck camper, just not sure about that on this half-ton truck. Or any truck. I've never been in one, don't know anything about them, don't know how easy they are to get on/off, don't know how cramped, overall, I would feel in a truck camper. Might be fine and dandy. And perhaps more practical for me than towing a trailer.

In lieu of that, what about just a camper shell? I might even get a new truck. I think Nissan is coming out with a Cummins diesel Titan for 2016. But on the camper shell idea... are there any that are truly waterproof and are there any that I could insulate somehow? Is there a way to open the rear window in my truck, leave the engine running and use the ac/heat for comfort back to the camper shell or do you think that is impossible to cool/heat back there? Actually, in the winter, I could just rely on a sleeping bag. In summers, it gets real hot and a/c would be nice or even a necessity.

Of course, it would be best to have a truck camper... a decent bed, plus toilet/shower/stove. But...

Sure would like to hear some feedback from you experienced people.
