Sleep under a camper shell instead of truck camper?

I am exploring ideas. I'm not totally discounting possibility of buying a truck camper (or something else), but my main need is for a place to sleep from time to time when on the road. I have 2008 Nis...

before my camper I built a bunk in the back under the shell. Slept many nights on the beach. Sleeping bag and air mattress if I was going up scale.

I often think back on how easy it was then. Sure the camper is more comfortable, but sheesh seems like im always fixing something on the camper.
