Sleep under a camper shell instead of truck camper?

I am exploring ideas. I'm not totally discounting possibility of buying a truck camper (or something else), but my main need is for a place to sleep from time to time when on the road. I have 2008 Nis...

I also slept under a canopy in this early 80's Mazda and traveled most of the US Pacific coast that way. My upgrade was to the little fiberglass trailer that you see in this picture up at Squaw Valley in the late 80's.
