Sleep under a camper shell instead of truck camper?

I am exploring ideas. I'm not totally discounting possibility of buying a truck camper (or something else), but my main need is for a place to sleep from time to time when on the road. I have 2008 Nis...

My first pickup was a 1968 Chevrolet C10 with a camper shell. I used that set up to go camping for a year before I bought my first Cabover Camper which was a Six Pac Model 96. I have many happy memories from camping in the shell. I agree, do not ride in the shell while driving because of the CO issue.
