In my opinion, foam is a loser. Every place one lies on it is compressed into a brick. No chance for a breath of air. Or a puff of heat, if needed. What one needs for distribution/dissipation of the body heat we all manufacture so as to achieve efficient heating AND cooling of the human body is air circulation. Foam doesn't allow for that.
Best mattress pad bar none is a plain ol' wool fleece, the coarser the better. It will keep you comfortable year 'round, especially if paired with that other perfect moderator of body temps, a down coverlet.
