Slide cable popping (Heartland wilderness)

When the large slide in our Wilderness ultralight by Heartland is run out it pops regularly and you can feel it in the whole camper.

It's like it's binding and letting go.

You can barely feel it when running the slide in but when running it out it's loud.

Any tips on how to diagnose what's wrong?

Suds, that is classic gearbox failure.
The first one had the loud bang and the other 2 had the skipping in one direction only.

Failed gearbox housing. Look at the center ring for the center gear. Supposed to be round.

Thanks! We confirmed it is the gearbox. I'm just hoping they help me out on parts.

  • IMHO, As a first step, I would remove the valence and operate the slide (you will probably have to in any case) to see what is happening. It would eliminate the guess work.

What year is it? BAL made a LOT of bad gearboxes in 2015, and the first sign of failure is the gears slipping, sometimes making a popping noise, usually in one direction. Sometimes a loud bang at the end of the travel. Go up and look over the wood facia at the center of the slide where the motor and gearbox are. The gearbox will have stickers with part number and serial number. If the serial number starts with 15... bingo.
    All 3 of mine failed.

My slide is "hesitating", (pausing?) at a regular pace as it goes out. This to me points to the motor/gearbox going bad.

Did any of your three make a repeating noise at regular intervals in just one direction but work great the other way? Mine works perfectly on the way in but seems like it slips on the way out.

Good find, Bill. Lots of good stuff on the channel about different RV issues.

  • On my 2013 2750RL, the cable arrangement is like this., and can be seen above the slide if it is partially open.

Just wondering if your slide is pulling even top-to-bottom and side-to-side. Does it look level both ways when it is fully extended? When out all the way, and standing outside, the bottom cables should have a bit of slack. could be the gear on top of the motor is skipping a tooth because too much slack in the chain.(see video).

I'm not too bad with a wrench, and I have adjusted mine. It's a real pain to do because the top face trim of the slide needs to come off (inside) unless you have extra long arms.

Anyway, that's a start. Good luck.
