Alta Slide Lock

I thought about getting a slide lock in the past, but was always afraid of damaging the slide or RV wall if I forgot to remove it before starting to extend the slide.

Only a concern (transit lock) IF MFG. recommends/provides them.

And IF used one should hang bright colored ribbon/flags from them and put a note on slideout control switch........"TRANSIT LOCK!!!!"

The ones I had was pretty useless. The area it wedges between is where all the weather stripping is located. The rubber had a bit of an angle to it so the lock ends couldn't sit flush with the slide wall and would pop out. Couldn't tighten them either.

Our HTT had slide locks provided by the mfg. We always used them since FR apparently thought they were needed. Never had any trouble other than I'm not quite tall enough to reach to put them on....getting them off was a snap....and yes, they did come with a bright orange tag hanging from a cord....no way to miss it. Our new TT does not have slide locks. If they didn't come OEM, I wouldn't worry about adding them.

Ours came with 2 poles sized to fit, one goes on each side of the slide for travel. I think it depends of the type of slide mechanism you have...ours is rack/pinion with an electric motor, not sure if you need them with hydraulic or not. I know in ours it takes the strain off of the mechanism in keeping the slid closed while traveling.

Last trip up north I passed an RV with the slide out about 6"...driver oblivious.

Our old Sunnybrook said to use the slide locks on the top, Terry says use the slides locks on the sides.

The ACTUAL purpose of the slide locks is not to prevent accidental opening (this would be a REALLY RARE happening) but to keep pressure on the seals so water does not get inside the trailer when towing in heavy rain. I wouldn't travel without mine. Most ANY electric slide can back off a quarter of an inch or so which would allow water to get past the seals. Hydraulic slides generally have a more "built in" type of lock as if the fluid goes they CAN open during travel.

Don't use because can't remember there in there red flag or not, don't face the slide when using the switch

While slowly going over a speed bump, I noticed our small slide out, which is about 18 inches deep and just a wardrobe, on the front rocked violently. The large slide out further back, that is 40 inches deep and holds both a couch and a dinnette, doesn't move at all. Our former 25 footer had a small slide out (18 inches) with couch and galley, would move going slowly over a speed bump. I created braces for the old trailer using adjustable braces that hold cargo in place. Look almost the same as the Alta Slide Lock that have been shown. For the wardrobe on the new trailer I bought an adjustable clamp that can be reversed to be a brace from Sears. I have a read flag on it and hang another flag over the switch when it is in place. Simple, works good, better safe than picking up pieces on the road. Your results may vary.

Mine came with a slide lock which includes a long yellow streamer that says "remove before extending slide". During the PDI, the dealer advised me not to use it because it "really isn't necessary".
Since the camper is covered and the slide is leeward, I left the lock off during winter storage, but it is always in place during transit.

Thanks for the replies. I think our electric slide slipped out some while traveling last Spring, either that or it didn't get closed tight before we left. Now it doesn't close as tightly on the top front corner as the other 3 corners. We had it serviced and checked when we got home and no malfunction was found. I'm diligent about checking it when we reach camp, and sometimes there is a little "give" to it after traveling. I think I would feel more secure if we had something like this.
