The likely culprit is the seal on top did not flip allowing water to seep underneath.
I keep on hand a 10ft telescoping latter to inspect and sweep off debris.
Something else that should be a part of regular maintenance is treating the seals with 303 or silicone as they will last MUCH longer and helps repel water.
