I don't think that was a drw. In any case, I've driven a Class A on the beach, and I'm not the only one. You do need to think about what you are going to do and where you are going.
On the other hand, my father-in-law has stuck his lightweight pickup 3 times on the beach so far. :)
Back to slides, I don't agree that a slide is heavier because the alternative amount of room is in a longer camper! For me, it's shorter and wider or longer with more overhang and skinnier for the same amount of room.
As far as something to break goes, slides by now aren't exactly new technology. When I bought my Host, it was at least the third revision of slides for Host. As far as I can tell, most manufacturers have changed their designs as well, and slides for all of those companies that have been in business a while are very reliable.
My furnace has been the most problematic part of my camper. I could do without it, but that doesn't seem to be a good tradeoff either.
