Small holes/tears in aluminum skin

So I am knee-deep into this cabover rebuild project, finally got all the wet bad wood out with the help of a Dremel Multi-Tool.

Found several small holes & rips in the outer skin where water was getting through (made a few more as well cutting out the wood) and am wondering what the best remedy is for them.

I'm going to reframe the whole area with new treated wood & foam insulation, then 1/2 inch ply for the bed & underbed storage compartment.

What would you guys suggest for patching the holes? They are all small, the biggest ones are probably the size of half an M&M, but there's quite a few (maybe a dozen) of them.

Let me know what you think!

  • I use eternabond tape... I too have put my multi-max through the aluminum. My camper is an off white color, so I painted the eternabond with some almond krylon and it matched up perfectly. I put a piece on the inside and outside while i was in there. It wont ever be a problem. I got a little overzealous taking the bathroom apart.
  • I have no strong feelings with using treated wood. I would be more concerned with using wood that is knot free.

You posted; "... the biggest ones are probably the size of half an M&M, ...". I am wondering if the M&M you are referring to is with peanuts or plain. I also wonder if plain, is the half like a hamburger bun, or the other way?

I could not resist trying for humor on the hole size.

  • You can always pop rivet a hole if it's small enough, but for virtually invisible repairs get a fiberglass repair kit, cut a small piece of fiberglass, soak it in the clear resin and apply over the hole.
