small TT and towing w/o WD/AS hookup

i have been looking at small TTs that a 4.0L V6 4runner SR5 (hitch but no trans cooler tow package that i know of) might pull on flat terrain w/ relative ease.

been reading this forum about some new (to me, anyway) designs of rpods, T@Bs, and various eggshells are interesting. would really be interested in a popup w/ an enclosed bath, esp. if it was hardsided (aliner or vertical sided).

is this better and/or easier than other WD/AS systems?

thanks
  • A plain WDH usually has a hitch head to hold up the ball and hold 2 trunnion bars extending along each side of the A frame. Then at the end of each bar there's a chain going up to the frame.

I had the Andersen with my 16' KZ TT and liked it very well. The KZ had 350-380 lb. hitch weight, no problem at all for the Andersen. It's light, clean (no grease) and easy to stow away when not in use. When I sold the TT, the new owner got me to throw it in to close the deal.

    thanks

Adding a transmission cooler is easy, and since the days of the $300 exchange rebuilt C6 / TH400 are long gone, one of the best investments you can make if you price a replacement transmission.
  • thanks, you guys

i have seen several youtubes of wdh/anti-sway systems.

    1. what does a wdh ONLY consist of (look like), and

    2. if keeping speeds under 55 mph, how would the 4runner do w/ a rpod 178 w/o wd/as
  • We didn't know our 4 Runner had a trans cooler - but it did have a tow hitch. Turned out it does have a trans cooler and it pulls our Lance 1685 just fine. We have a Fastway E-2 WDH and sway bars which are easy - takes us just a couple minutes to hook up and unhook. Click here for a write up I did on towing the Lance 1685 10,000 miles including out west, might have some info for you.

We looked at the RPods and popups for their lighter weight (we're pushing the limit with our Lance 1685) but the smaller trailers didn't have enough storage for living in the trailer for months at a time. Your experiences may differ, but have fun!
  • This is the Andersen hitch. I use it with my Camplite 21BHS and Ram 1500 and it works great. Others will prefer different hitches. If you need a lot of weight distribution, then the Andersen may not be the one; its strengths are sway and bounce control, but it does distribute weight. It is easy to install, light, and very dependable.

Like I said, others may chime in differently based on their own experiences and your needs.
