Solar Install on Roo 23SS roof

I am in the process of setting up a solar install on our HTT 2011 Rockwood 23SS. I'm looking to mount my 235W panel on the roof - any experiences here on how the roof is constructed on our trailers? I'm hoping to tie uni-strut rails directly into the beams (joists?) in the roof.

Before I call rockwood, thought I would ask here.

Thanks in advance
Marc

  • Hi Marc,

I would install on the slope (in fact I did). If installing only one panel now--do it so it has the longer cable run--that way when you install #2 there won't be problems running wire to it.

There is a place in Ontario that is selling panels for around $1.09 per watt--why not go whole hog now? After all it is only about two tanks of gas.

I'm going to upgrade using Poly technology and will populate the roof. I'll have to do some careful measuring very soon.

I'm having fun lately with the solar power actually sending energy to the chassis!!! I've seen as much as 12 amps when the battery bank is full.
  • Thanks Don- I have appreciated all your posts here on solar. I have learned a lot, and is assisting me a great deal in my design.

I see 2 options for me on achieving the 5% tilt (in storage the trailer is nose high so not an issue, this I guess is more for when camping).
    (1) the roof slopes side to side (vs front to back like 5er), I could mount the panel on one side using the natural slop of the roof- but then I would probably need another panel (which is in my long term plan once I install an inverter)
    (2) Can I mount the panel flat side to side, but angled with the back up 5%?
What other options might I be missing - how do other achieve?

I really don't want to get into a movable tilt design as it isn't easy to get up on the roof while camping.
    thanks
    Marc
  • Hi,

Be sure to tilt the panel 5 degrees so moisture will run off it.
