I too had a VERY negative experience with a pop up. It was a "Palomino". Total garbage. So many defects it was a project from day one. After 1 year it was shot, heavy water damage. I feel for the OP. We traded it off, and got a Hybrid. One of the best built things I have ever owned. My parents bought a Forest RIver and it's junk. Not fair to them.....
Palomino is a Forest River, as is Coachmen/Viking, Flagstaff, and Rockwood. When the economy bankrupted Palomino and Coachmen (Viking), Forest River swooped in, and acquired them as they did with their other makes. If you want a hard roof, tent based pop up, Jayco/Starcraft and Somerset are your only other offerings. Not much to choose from for sure as Forest River uses a lot of their "build quality" techniques on all of their pop ups and Starcraft popups are either clones or near clones of their Jayco cousins.
After Forest River bought Palomino, I noticed they started building them with the same inferior designs that the Rockwoods had. I know I had a piece of garbage Rockwood Pop Up that spent more time in the repair shop than the driveway or campgrounds. It was soon traded up to a Starcraft.
