Sometimes a great misadventure

Sometimes I wonder why me? But then why not me, because, I know that the fickle finger of fate has it out for me. Fortunately I can deal with it.

We had an oil leak in the 2011 F350 on the turbo base seal and had it repaired, used it with the camper on and all was good.

This week the plan was to have all the gear loaded in the camper by Thursday mid day, I would finish my shift and meet Ruth at the barn load the horse up and head off to Hollister where she and her friend Veronique would compete and I would be the show EMT. It seemed simple enough.

Late afternoon I get a call. Ruth can't find her keys to the truck that have the comparment keys on them and can't put the shore cord back in the storage compartment. So I rip home in the work vehicle with my keys and take care of it, then she finds her set...

Back to work I go, drop the work van, deal wth some offce bs, and head to the barn...only running an hour late no biggie we will miss the traffic.

Some 50 miles down the road we hear this loud bang. Neither of us could pinpoint it so I pulled to the shoulder of US 101 in Morgan Hill. I look everywhere and cannot spot anything. no dash warning lights no fluid leaks all four trailer tires and 6 truck tires are fine. Hop back behind the wheel and strart to pull out. Yep zapped twice in one day by the finger...no turbo power, boost gauge reads zero. It's almost 9pm, losing light and we are 15 miles from the show barn. It's good thing that 6.7 liter diesel can still move 21,000 pounds of vehile down the road at 55 without a turbo. we limped it into the show grounds at 10pm.

Unloaded the horses, dropped the trailer and parked the camper in my spot where I can hook up to AC..What else can happen today? nothing right? we made it safely, tomorrow I will call the shop that did the work as we are only 40 mines from them.

Plugged in and started the electric kettle to heat water for the doggies food as they have been very good sports about getting fed 4 hours late. Then we lost power. Beat me with a bat did the fickle finger of fate. At least this time it was only the outlet on the side of the barn that tripped and there was another 30a plug on a different circuit just a few feet away. I do like easy fixes.

So after a day that started at 5 am we hit the sack at midnight. First ride was at 9an Repair shop open at 7 so thats what I set my alarm for as they were getting a call fist thing.

Now at 5 am my dogs decided that they need to wake dad because they knew he would be really pissed if he stepped in something in the morning.. arrghhh crack of dawn walk was not what I wanted. This trip is not going well.

At 7 sharp I called my service advisor and told him what happened. We both figured a hose had blown. I told him I was and hour and a half away from home with a 4500 camper, two horses and a horse trailer and needed the truck fixed so that I could get back home. He sad bring it in and they would jump on it. While I was on the line with him I had popped the hood and was poking around. The Turbo intercooler hose had broken. He said that if thats all it was he could have me back on the road in an hour or so

So off came the camper and super truss.

As the show EMT I can't leave so it was up to Ruth to nurse the truck over to the shop. It kept stalling at low RPM so she had to gun it out of every stop.

Turns out they did not have the part in stock, Figures...but another shop did so they ran over and picked it up. 2 hours later the truck was fixed. Best part was that aside from the aggravation and a few gallons of Diesel the repair cost me nothing. They said that the hose could have been damaged during the oil leak repair so they would cover it. Frontier Ford, Service advisor Mike Marshall upstanding folks.

Had the Lance reloaded 15 minutes after Ruth returned

The rest if the day went smoothly
two trays of dry rubbed Ribs went into the oven

I hung out in the shade

Ruth went for a ride

the horse got a massage

Swallows came for a visit

of course we had our kids with us

I love having an airfield behind the facility that is used exclusively by vintage aircraft.

Ruth and Wyleigh

Ruth is having a good year. She is the High Point Adult Amature for the Gilroy Gaits 2016 series

and her current Ranking in the US for second level horses ridden by an Adult Amateur

In retrospect the worst thing that happened was a minor annoyance of a blown hose and a competitor that suffered a minor laceration to a finger whose bleeding made it look a lot worse than it was.

Best part was waking up this morning and celebrating the fact that I have been sober for 35 years to the day

Loading up to head home i kept wondering if anything else would go wrong on the trip home. Nope the fates said I had had enough

Got the horses to the barn and the truck home without an issue in heavy winds, some traffic and a couple of steep grades

Now I have 3 days to clean it out, restock and head back out next thursday to work a show 80 miles away. Then I have a 5 day turn around before we head out on a 9 day road trip to Wyoming:B
