If you do, stay away from 03-09 GM ones. They tend to get stuck and you can't lower them without surgery. They use two different metals, which causes bi-metal corrosion, and have a safety lock that is engaged using aluminum. How do I know this, had one, had a flat on a rainy day. Tire dropped 2", cable came all the way down, but the safety lock did its job, a bit too well. Had to have it towed home, then I was able to get the bumper off to reach the mechanism and get the tire off.

I just got a TT and the spare is loaded in the rear compartment. I haven't decided if I want to keep it there or move it to a mount somewhere.

I have a welder and can lay down a fairly good bead. It wasn't always that way. A couple of times. when applying for work, I made the mistake of blurting out those three words that can't be retracted, "I can weld". From there, it isn't long before you find yourself with a stinger in hand for the better part of days.

The other thing is that we have local welding and fabrication shops close to us (borderland of farming communities) and those guys will do a few welds for nearly nothing. If you have your project thought out and have the steel ready to weld, a trip to your local shop can be a low cost solution and save time.

It was on the back bumper when I bought the TT. I have used it once on the last leg of a western trip. It will be on the back bumper of the TT when I sell it.

Yup...it's one of those "I'm thinking about it" jobs.

That current stowage bracket is made of some pretty sh*t steel....I will probably have to fabricate something a little more weldable.

I think I'm done for this year...I wanna go camping and I have quite a few jobs on the honey do list.

Hey there Mister Nobby, you could break out the welder and do a little mod to that bracket so that it could sit up on top of the bumper rather than hang off the back. That would get it in near flush with the back wall.

our tt had basically the same bracket as the op's but without the hinge

what a goofy mickey mouse setup, the tyre sticks out a good six inches past the back bumper. ugly, rusted mess!! and don't get me started on those stupid covers!!

mines under the bed now. safe, clean and dry and one less wrench to carry

I carry my spare in the truck bed.
