Splatter Guard and Cooking?

We're about to take our first camping trip in our new to us pop-up camper. The stove was taken out by the previous owner, so we will be using a single burner table top propane stove. It doesn't have a splatter guard unlike the Coleman propane stove we have (but will not be taking). What do you do for a splatter guard to prevent the canvas from getting spots? The canvas in our tent trailer has been replaced and is in great condition so I'd hate to the first to dirty it. Thanks.
  • Thanks for the feedback SoundGuy - this is going to be an overnight trip so we're trying to keep it simple. Heating up canned stew will be ok in the tent camper and after reading about the splatter, I will be precooking our bacon at home for a one pot breakfast meal. In the future, when we take two night trips, then we'll be cooking outside.

Tvov - yes, we have a splatter screen too that rests on the pan.

I'd agree with those recommending against cooking inside a popup, other than perhaps making coffee, toast, etc. Any real cooking I've done while camping has been outside under the awning and with our Weber Q grill parked on the campsite table away from the camper. Recently I bought a 10' x 10' straight wall canopy at WalMart for $88 Cdn and DIY'd some inexpensive tarp walls so I can enclose it when it's raining and/or really cold. I'll still park our grill out in the open away from the camper but set up a small table within the canopy to use as a cooking station, protected from the weather. Throw a small heater in there and it's amazing how comfortable it can be. Here's a couple of pics with it set up on our deck here at the house.

  • rockhillmanor, well I'll have to simmer then. It will be cold and I don't want to be outside cooking, but who knows, I may resort to it.
  • I wouldn't be using that inside.

Even if it doesn't actually splatter the grease goes up with the steam from cooking. It will stain the canvas. I don't ever cook inside my RV.
  • Thank you downtheroad! I'll definitely invest in something like that for future trips, and improvise something in the meantime. This folding screen would easily stow away too.
