St. Mary Campground - Glacier National Park

We just returned from a wonderful weekend in St. Mary - East Glacier (Glacier National Park). A very nice campground with flush toilets, showers (closed for the season beginning September 8th) and a dump station. We saw 3 moose, a grizzly bear, a black bear and lots of colorful birds. We live 30 minutes from Glacier National Park and love our "backyard."

Here was our view from the C Loop...

Here is a sunset view from space C106.

  • Recently completed 5100 miles to the Pacific Northwest that included Theodore Roosevelt NP, Glacier NP, Mt Ranier NP, Mt Hood, Columbia River Gorge, Grand Teton NP, Yellowstone NP, Black Hills NF, and Badlands NP. Of all the places I visited, I can't wait to see Glacier again! Many Glacier CG was awe inspiring.

  • Awesome! I love that area. Stayed at St Mary's last Labor Day and had a terrific trip, but I did not get to see the bears like you!
  • We saw the moose when we hiked the Red Rock Lake hike from the Swiftcurrent Trail. If you drive toward the Many Glacier Lodge and continue to the end of the road, you are at the trailhead. It's a simple 1.8 miles one way, but you pass two lakes frequented by moose and see two waterfalls. Ten years in Montana, and these are the first wild moose we have seen.

The grizzly was in a field near Many Glacier laying around all day near the road, causing a bear jam.

The black bear was a scary sight. We had just finished listening to the park astronomer at the St. Mary Visitor Center and drove up the road to try our hand at astro-photography. In the pitch black darkness while taking 30 second photos, I heard a click-click-click nearby. I shined my flashlight toward the road and saw a big black bear walking 30 feet away down the road! My DW and I jumped in the truck as fast as we could!

Here is an iPhone shot of the cow moose with her calf. My wife took this from 100 feet away.

  • Love the views.....I've got to visit Glacier NP one of these days soon. To all those who have negative remarks about St. Mary's cg...(on other forums) I now say poo.....looks good to me.
