steens mt oregon

Has anyone visited Steens Mt in Oregon southeast corner? How about Fish Lake in Steens mt? Camping there?
  • Stayed at the Alvord desert a few years back on the eastern side. Just watch for the wind storms, they can come out of no where and whip things up fast.
  • Page Springs, the BLM campground near Frenchglen, is a nice campground very close to the Steens Mt. Loop Road. It has water pumps, vault toilets and recycling/garbage. It usually has a host. Campground gets full in the fall with hunters but if you arrive early, it shouldn't be a problem. It has a pretty little stream that runs through it and the sites are spacious.
  • clickStayed here for a week in late may 2010, Resturant, tavern, gas station, RV park in one entity on Hwy 78 south of Burns. Was a great place to operate out of to tour the Steens MT area. Stopped @ a BLM rest area on the east side just in time for a F-16 to blast by going west to east, appeared over the top of the ridge so I guess his altitude was about 9000', it was cool.
  • Steens mountain is really neat. There is a campground at fish lake. Be sure to give yourself enough time to drive the loop road. The views from the top are amazing and looking into Kiger Gorge and off the east face is breathtaking. Depending on winter snow pack you may not be able to get up there until mid-June or early July if it gets real deep. I've snowmobiled up there on Memorial weekend before. Its definitely worth the trip to see it. A drive down the center patrol road of the Malheur refuge is another site while your in the area to see the wildlife. Check out diamond craters and the Malheur wildlife refuge headquarters to the north if you'll be in the area. Page springs campground near Frenchglen is another nice campground at the west side of Steens mountain where the loop road begins. It's along the blitzen river and makes a nice base camp for exploring the area. Have fun!
